This area sits on the same latitude as Athens, Lisbon, and San Francisco, yet in stark contrast it is one of snowiest places on earth, yet warm and fertile in summer. This is due to some curious weather patterns caused by the warm currents flowing through the Sea of Japan. It is thought that this has been the weather in this area for the last eight thousand years, and through all that time there have been people thriving here.
